Alumni activities

This page gives details of various musical activities of ex-Trinity choristers et al.

Stephen Barlow

You may have seen details in alumni publications, in print or on-line, of Stephen Barlow's recent release of the complete songs of George Butterworth, accompanying baritone Mark Stone in a collaboration which has received much critical success.  The CD was selected as the Editor's Choice in the June 2010 Gramophone magazine, and they certainly do justice to these beautiful pieces.

Stephen was Organ Scholar at Trinity from 1972 - 1975

Stile Antico

This accomplished vocal ensemble, several ex-Trinity choral scholars among them (Oliver Hunt, 2000, Kate Ashby, 2000, until recently Tom Herford, 2002 - and, from time to time, Ali Hill, 2003) have just released their fourth CD - 'Media Vitae', luminous performances of antiphons, responsories and anthems by John Sheppard the great 15th c. composer; and it looks as though it will repeat the critical success of their first three award-winning recordings - the reviewers are queuing up to praise the release.   They have been touring this programme during 2009 and had a recent spot on 'In Tune', the early evening programme on BBC Radio 3, when they sang some of the items from the CD.  The group seems to go from strength to strength - check out their website for more details.  Indeed, come and hear them when they give a recital in Trinity College Chapel on 14 August, 2010, sponsored by Cambridge Early Music.

Cambridge Early Music (CEM)

How many of you know that Selene Webb (Chapel Secretary and TCCA Membership Secretary) has an 'alter ego' - Selene Mills - under which alias she runs not one, but two Early Music Summer Schools in Cambridge (based at Sidney Sussex) as well as a year-round programme of Early Music recitals and concerts?

Indeed, one of the recitals last year was by by Stile Antico (see above), in Trinity College Chapel - and another is booked for 14 August, 2010.

She is always on the lookout for recruits to the Schools - which look really great (she describes them as..'Rewardingly intensive'... - sounds good to me!).  For more information, booking forms etc., check out the CEM web site

Fiona (& Ben)

In Paradisum

This new and exciting album of music for soprano is sung by Fiona Jessica Wilson, who was in Trinity Choir from 1990 to 1993. The piece which inspired this CD, In Paradisum, was written by Fiona's partner, Ben Robbins, and won the Classic FM composing competition in 2007. More information can be found on Fiona’s website: www.fionajessicawilson.com.

Hugh Newton-John

You may have read the small piece in the Newsletter about Hugh Newton-John (brother of Olivia) who was head chorister in the Trinity choir between 1952 and 1953 under Hubert Middleton.  The article mentions a sketch, which was sent along with his message - and here it is!  An unknown lady, drawn, by Hugh, from life in 2007.  We do not know who she is, nor why Hugh wanted us to have the sketch - perhaps this is the genesis of Australia's very own 'Mona Lisa mystery' - but it certainly shows that Hugh is a dab hand with the pencil, despite his illness.  If YOU know who it is - or anything about it - please do let us know.

VOCE

VOCE - Voices of Cambridge Ensemble - directed by TCCA Committee member, Jonathan Sampson, gave a recital - Love Calls - in Trinity Chapel on 9 February, 2008, and continue an active programme of events.

Trinity Baroque

Directed by Julian Podger, the renowned early music practitioner, the group - formed in Cambridge during Julian's time at Trinity, has had a full programme of activities over the years.  They provided the music for the Sunday morning eucharist at the July, 2006 inaugural event for TCCA.

Have a look at their website http://www.trinitybaroque.com/index.html for a resumé of their achievements and upcoming events (principally in Austria and Germany).  A recent project was a well received Bach motets CD, linked to a Wigmore Hall recital given on 22 February, 2008.  Julian writes more about the genesis of this project in the recent Newsletter.
